Morning Workshop 8am – 1pm: Aerated Static Piles

Aerated static piles are composting systems that use the naturally occurring microbial population in the feedstocks along with the appropriate oxygen supply and moisture to produce compost in a few weeks to months, making it a useful method for agriculture producers or rural areas that want to dispose of organic waste without taking it to the waste station. Participants will learn general principles of composting, uses of compost in agricultural systems, and will learn how to set up an aerated static pile system on site from expert composters from Reunity Resources in Santa Fe. Participation from people in the Edgewood Soil Water Conservation District are prioritized and others will be added to the waitlist.

Afternoon Workshop 3:30pm – 5:30: Worm Composting

Worm composting, or vermiculture, uses the red wiggler worm to process feedstocks into compost and can be scaled from food scraps in an apartment to a larger, multi-family system. You will learn basics of composting, uses for compost, and how to set up and maintain a worm composting system with the experts from Reunity Resources. You will go home with some supplies to begin your own compost!
