What is a “syndemic”?

Click here to listen to the podcast interview between Radio Cafe’s Mary-Charlotte Domandi and Ross Hammond, an external faculty member with our friends over at the Santa Fe Institute.

A “syndemic” is a synergistic epidemic – a widespread and undesirable situation or issue created by the interaction of two or more things. On this show you will hear about the problematic combination of climate change, obesity, and undernourishment – and some solutions that address all three at once.

Ross Hammond is an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute, and a distinguished associate professor in public health and social policy at Washington University in St. Louis. Hammond is also a senior fellow in Economic Studies at the Brookings Institution, where he is director of the Center on Social Dynamics and Policy. His primary area of expertise is modeling complex dynamics in economic, social, and public health systems using mathematical and computational methods from complexity systems science. His current research topics include obesity etiology and prevention, food systems, tobacco control, behavioral epidemiology, crime, corruption, segregation, trust, and decision-making.

Radio Cafe is a program of in-depth conversations with activists, scientists, authors, artists, and other deep thinkers. Their newest shows, Radio Cafe on the Santa Fe New MexicanDown to Earth,Deep Science Radio, and Radio Activism, are about how the world works how to respond to the big issues of our time – threats to democracy; assaults on land, water, and climate; crazy inequality. “Not that we have magical solutions, but we can shine a light on what’s going on and perhaps even find ways that each of us can do our part.”
