September is Hunger Action Month

  • Over 14% of people in Santa Fe County live below the poverty line and are classified as food insecure.
  • New Mexico ranks 50th in childhood food insecurity (last in the nation).
  • 22% of adults and 18% if children in Santa Fe County eat 5+ fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Obesity rates in New Mexico have more than doubled in the last 20 years, with 28% of adults considered obese (and there is a direct link between poverty and obesity).
  • The annual cost to New Mexican individuals, families, and society due to diabetes is a staggering $1.8 billion a year.

What YOU Can Do To End Hunger

Everyone in our community deserves access to fresh, locally-produced agricultural products that are more nutritious and taste better than food that travels thousands of miles to the grocery stores.

Hunger is a growing crisis in Northern New Mexico, affecting 1 of every 6 people (and 1 of every 4 children) in our state. Many Santa Feans lack access to food due to low-income and location of grocery stores. Poverty is a potent and well-documented predictor of health outcomes, with a direct link between inequitable access to healthy, affordable food and chronic diseases, particularly in communities of people of color and low-income communities.

Invest in Double Up Food Bucks

Customers with food support from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can go to the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Info Booth and scan their EBT cards for any amount and we will double that amount for them to spend on fresh, healthy local food. The Institute has been offering a SNAP doubling program since 2009.  The New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association helped bring this program to markets across the state in 2015.

Invest in Fresh Rx

Our partnering doctors issue select patients “prescriptions” for fresh fruits and vegetables. These prescriptions can be redeemed at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market.

97% of participants would like to participate again. Doctors reported that this program has helped strengthen the doctor-patient relationship, open up more dialog around healthy nutrition, and contributed to their patients building new healthy habits.

Invest in our Support of Tuesday Del Sur Market

The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute support all the work of the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market – especially the Tuesday Del Sur Market. We provide nearly $450,000 in direct and indirect support to help ensure that the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market is around to connect local farmers and consumers. The Tuesday Del Sur Market is important because it is bringing food to a community that is a food dessert – with homes being 2-6 miles away from a grocery store.

  • If you don’t have the time, then make a cash donation. They can do more with a few bucks than a few dented expired cans of corn.
  • Better yet, purchase extra when you shop at the Farmers’ Market and take it to The Food Depot. They are always in dire need for healthy, fresh foods AND you will also be supporting a local farmer, many of whom use government assistance.
