Senator Heinrich NM Food Tour

On August 7, 2019 Senator Martin Heinrich did a New Mexico Food Tour as part of 2019 National Farmers Market Week. Thank you, Senator Heinrich, for hi-lighting the importance of local food and its connection to the culture, heritage, economy, environment, and health of northern New Mexico!

Three Sisters Kitchen (ABQ)

 

He started his tour with our friends over at Three Sisters Kitchen in Albuquerque to learn how they are addressing food access and food equity issues in their community. (They offer a Fresh Rx program that is similar to the Fresh Rx program done at the Institute.)

 

 

 

 

Urban Rebel Farms (Santa Fe)

 

Next, he headed north to visit with Market vendor & Institute board member, Joey Jacques, and his business partner,Jerome Baca, of Urban Rebel Farms to talk about the importance of growing GMO-free and chemical free, and of knowing what goes into growing our food.

 

 

 

 

Reunity Resources (Santa Fe)

 

Then he visited Market vendor Reunity Resources to check out their community farm and learn about their composting / food waste remediation program.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Santa Fe Farmers’ Market & Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute
He ended his tour at the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market & Institute. He met with Institute Executive Director Kierstan Pickens, Market General Manager Debbie Burns, Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber, the New Mexico Farmers Marketing Association (who manages the state-wide SNAP matching program, Double Up Food Bucks), and the local chapter of the National Young Farmers Coalition (called the Northern New Mexico Young Farmers Alliance.)
