Partnering with The Food Depot

Hunger is a growing crisis in New Mexico. It is often hidden, but it affects one of every five people and one of every three children in our state.

A 2014 study conducted by Feeding America and the New Mexico Association of Food Banks gave an unsettling picture of those in our community that are seeking emergency food assistance:

  • 30% are children
  • 21% are seniors
  • 16% are raising their grandchildren

Of households needing help, 89% have an income of less than $20,000 annually, or $384 per week. Sixty-one percent report having to choose between paying for utilities or medical care and buying food. And more than half of hungry households–53%–include at least one person who has worked in the past 12 months. In households with no one able to work, 87% are disabled, retired, in poor health or act as caretaker of another person.

But you can make a difference while also supporting local agriculture!

The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market and The Food Depot have formed a new partnership. Starting July 9, you can purchase food from Market vendors and take it to the new Food Depot Booth. Simple as that!
